From an iced cake damaged by September heat to a kit you have to ice yourself, ordering a king cake online involves more than selecting a flavor and comparing advertised prices. Cakes may arrive fully decorated or as DIY kits, shipping may be included in the listed price or added during checkout, and similar-looking cakes may provide substantially different portions.
KingKingCakes.com has published a new report examining what customers actually receive when ordering king cakes online. The comparison included two rounds of orders from three sources, with two packages ordered from each source and six deliveries in total.
The complete comparison report includes photographs, measurements, weight tables and package-content details.
The products represented three common online options: a fully iced cake sent by Ground service, a lower-priced DIY kit sent by residential Ground service and KingKingCakes.com’s DIY package sent by FedEx 2Day express service.
KingKingCakes.com conducted the comparison and sells one of the products tested. The other bakeries were intentionally not identified because the purpose was to examine common shipping and packaging options—not criticize individual businesses.
The report did not rank taste, texture or appearance because those judgments are subjective. Instead, it focused on measurable details such as delivered price, shipping service, finished edible weight, portion size and package contents.
Hot-weather delivery produced one of the most significant findings. The fully iced cake was ordered twice during hot September weather. Both packages arrived the day after shipment, yet both cakes showed substantial icing movement and contact with the wrapping. The first delivery occurred when the recorded outdoor temperature was approximately 96 degrees.
Because both cakes arrived the day after shipment, Ground service alone did not explain the icing problem. The results instead demonstrated the risk of shipping a fully decorated cake during hot weather without packaging specifically designed to protect the icing from heat and contact.
DIY kits take a different approach. The cake travels undecorated while the icing and colored sugars remain in separate packages. This prevents finished decoration from sliding or sticking to the wrapping before delivery.
Shipping service still affects delivery planning. Ground schedules can vary by distance, while FedEx 2Day provides delivery by the end of the second business day after FedEx receives the package. KingKingCakes.com uses a fixed shipping charge for FedEx 2Day service on its standard cake shipments within the contiguous United States.
Physical measurements were taken during the standardized second round of testing. The fully iced cake weighed 2.32 pounds, the lower-priced DIY cake weighed 2.22 pounds after decorating and the KingKingCakes.com cake weighed 2.56 pounds after decorating.
Serving claims also varied. The three sellers advertised 12 to 15 servings, 30 to 35 servings and approximately 30 one-inch slices. When the cakes were cut into approximately one-inch portions using the same method, the fully iced cake produced 32 portions, while both DIY cakes produced 30.
Those results show why serving claims cannot be compared without knowing the assumed portion width. Larger dessert portions produce fewer servings, while narrower event portions produce more.
Off-season cake-and-shipping subtotals before tax also differed. The lower-priced DIY option totaled $53, the KingKingCakes.com package was approximately $67.99 and the fully iced cake with shipping included was $69.95. The option advertising shipping as included was therefore the most expensive of the three before tax.
KingKingCakes.com was not the least expensive option tested. Its package combined FedEx 2Day service, the heaviest finished cake in the standardized test, substantial portions, sturdy decorating supplies and a larger assortment of Mardi Gras extras.
Prices, promotions and package contents were recorded during the off-season and may change for the 2027 king cake season.
The report encourages buyers to compare the complete delivered price, shipping service, hot-weather protection, finished edible weight, serving size and everything included in the package before deciding where to order.
