Elevated Materials, a developer and manufacturer of ultra-thin lithium films for next-generation batteries, today announced that it has been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy for $50 million in federal funding to support the development of a new $100 million facility in the United States with an annual manufacturing capacity of approximately 3.5 GW.
The facility is expected to accelerate Elevated Materials’ roadmap to achieve gigawatt-hour-scale production and commercialize a new domestic source of its ultra-thin lithium-metal films and prelithiated materials to enable higher-energy, faster-charging batteries. By expanding U.S. production of these advanced materials, the project directly advances the Department of Energy’s efforts to strengthen domestic battery manufacturing and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains. Elevated Materials was one of seven companies selected for a combined $500 million through the Department’s Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing Grants program.
“The United States has made advanced battery manufacturing a national priority, and securing a domestic supply of critical materials that significantly increases energy density is central to that effort,” said Jim Cushing, CEO of Elevated Materials. “We developed this technology in California with support from DOE R&D programs and are proud to have been selected by the Department of Energy to now ramp it up to giga-watt scale.”
Elevated Materials’ proprietary roll-to-roll vacuum deposition platforms produce ELi™, the industry’s highest-quality ultra-thin lithium metal films. These films enable next-generation anode architectures across electric vehicles, consumer electronics, defense and aviation applications, and grid-scale energy storage. Demand has been particularly strong for lithium metal anodes, where ELi significantly improves both safety and performance. Over the past year, Elevated has achieved record output of ultra-thin lithium metal films, shipping over 250,000 meters of material to more than 30 customers worldwide.
About Elevated Materials
Elevated Materials is a TPG Rise Climate portfolio company, carved out of Applied Materials, focused on scaling breakthrough battery materials to strengthen U.S. competitiveness and support the electrification of critical industries.
