Molina Healthcare of Michigan (“Molina”), in collaboration with The MolinaCares Accord (“MolinaCares”) announced a grant to the Saginaw Food Club and Kitchen to improve access to healthy, affordable food. The $100,000 donation supports the construction of the facility, goods, and equipment. Completion of the building at 310 Meredith Street is slated for late 2026.
Nearly half of local households in the area around the new structure qualify for some form of assistance, and many families exhaust their food benefits within the first two weeks of each month, creating ongoing challenges in accessing healthy meals. The Food Club will serve households living at, or below, 200% of the federal poverty level, offering a low-cost, income-based membership program. Members will shop with points – fruits and vegetables are labeled with the lowest points, while snacks and processed foods are listed higher. As a result, families have an incentive to eat healthy.
“Adding the Food Club to the Saginaw Community will allow people the dignity to shop for their groceries in a way they can afford and take the strain off the emergency needs,” said Tina Swanson, CEO of Saginaw Food Club and Kitchen. “The contribution from MolinaCares has continued to move the project forward and without the overwhelming support from the community, this project wouldn’t be possible.”
“By expanding access to healthy food and supporting long-term community wellness, this partnership reflects Molina’s commitment to addressing the social drivers of health and improving outcomes for Michigan families,” said Terrisca Des Jardins, plan president for Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “Access to nutritious food is a critical factor influencing overall health outcomes, and this partnership supports a long-term, sustainable solution.”
