Caribbean Heritage & Colonialism History Insights Book, Pre-Screening Announced

Ian R. Clayton has announced a pre-screening event for his upcoming book launch of “Rogues in Paradise,” a historical narrative that celebrates Afro-British Caribbean culture and the people of Barbados. Unlike traditional Caribbean literature written by colonial powers, this work centers on authentic voices and lived experiences of island communities whose perspectives have long been excluded from historical accounts.

In the book, Clayton channels what’s been overlooked into character-driven vignettes spanning 300 years of island history. The book tells the story of street vendors, artisans, athletes, and business leaders alongside historical figures who rose from slavery to prominence. Stories range from the exploits of Ace, a charismatic trickster who lives by his wits, to the remarkable life of Rachel Pringle, who defied colonial constraints to build thriving enterprises in the 1700s despite being born into slavery.

The narrative weaves DNA genealogy analysis with anecdotal storytelling to trace African roots and examine how centuries of enslavement shaped contemporary Bajan identity. As a result, readers discover how resilience transformed descendants of enslaved people into masters of their own multicultural nation. Clayton explores chattel houses as symbols of freedom and ownership during emancipation, rum shops as vital community centers, and the rugged Bathsheba coastline as a spiritual refuge for island residents.

His work documents prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Mia Mottley, recognized by Time Magazine as a top influencer, and entertainer Rihanna, who became the youngest self-made female billionaire through her cosmetic brand ventures. The book also highlights revolutionary figures like Bussa, who led an uprising against plantation owners, and Sir Garfield Sobers, the world-famous cricketer who set records that stood for 35 years.

“ROGUES gives hope with the example of the resilient people of Barbados—where descendants of the slaves are masters of their own multicultural nation that welcomes and inspires all,” the author commented.
